Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County, California, and part of the Gateway Cities. The 14.7-square-mile (38.0 km²) city recorded 87,306 residents in the 2020 United States census, up 1,975 from the 2010 census. Incorporated in February 1898 and becoming a charter city in 1955, Whittier is named after John Greenleaf Whittier, a noted Quaker poet, and hosts Whittier College. It is bordered by three unincorporated communities—West Whittier-Los Nietos, South Whittier, and East Whittier—whose combined population surpasses that of the city proper. Early settlers included Jonathan Bailey and his wife, Rebecca, who held Quaker meetings on their porch. Others, such as Aquila Pickering, shared the faith. In tribute to Whittier, residents deeded him land, inspiring his dedication poem. Statues honor him in Central Park, while his poem “The Barefoot Boy” is memorialized at the Whittier Public Library. Streets in Uptown Whittier, including Greenleaf Avenue, Bailey Street, Pickering Avenue, Penn Street, Hadley Street, Washington Avenue, and Painter Avenue, commemorate prominent Quaker figures such as William Penn and John Hunt Painter.
